Haryana faces innings defeat

Special Correspondent

ROHTAK: Bowlers brought Delhi in sight of its first victory of the season and left Haryana staring at an innings defeat in their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League group match at the Bansi Lal Stadium here on Thursday.

Nineteen wickets tumbled on the second day that saw Delhi resume its first innings at 330 for seven and reach 382. Thereafter, it was the turn of the Delhi bowlers, particularly leg-spinner Chetnya Nanda, who took seven wickets, to bring Haryana on its knees.

Much to the disappointment of a near-full house, the host batted poorly on a pitch that held no devil. Against an attack that was far from lethal, Haryana folded up for 113 to trail by 269 runs. Following on, Haryana reached 105 for six at stumps. It needs another 164 runs avert an innings defeat.

Virender Sehwag, who joined play under an hour from lunch after complaining of fever on Thursday morning, struck two late blows in the first innings and two more early in the second.

Rana stands firm

Haryana's Sachin Rana stood firm with a defiant 54 including a six and eight boundaries. He returned to entertain the sparse post-tea crowd with an 18-ball 20 before falling to Nanda for the second time in two sessions.

With Haryana losing 16 wickets for just over 200 runs, the crucial contribution of Delhi's overnight not out batsman Rajat Bhatia was pushed to the background. Bhatia resumed at 55 and was last out for 90 after tossing away his wicket in a bid to get closer to what could have been his third century of the season. In the company of Amit Bhandari, Bhatia put on 42 runs for the last wicket.

Later, the experienced medium-pacer Bhandari destroyed the Haryana top-order with a haul of three for 18 before Nanda and Sehwag hastened the demolition.
