CHANDIGARH: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu was remanded to judicial custody by the District Judicial Magistrate here on Thursday. Mr. Sidhu and his associate Rupinder Singh Sandhu "surrendered" before a High Court Division Bench comprising Justices Mehtab Singh Gill and Baldev Singh, which had convicted him last month in a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On December 6, 2006, both were handed a suspended three-year term and fine for causing the death of Gurnam Singh in a case of road rage in 1988 in Patiala. Both Mr. Sidhu and Mr. Sandhu filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court against their conviction. The apex court is scheduled to take up the SLP on Friday. During the hearing on Thursday, the Bench said they were not required to surrender as the previous sentence had been suspended till January 31. Citing Supreme Court judgments, Mr. Sidhu's counsel said surrendering before the lower court was a prerequisite for initiation of a hearing in an SLP. The Bench then directed Mr. Sidhu and his associate to surrender before the CJM of Chandigarh, to whom "necessary directions" would be conveyed. Accompanied by his counsel and friends, Mr. Sidhu appeared before the CJM, who ordered that the two be sent to the Patiala Central Jail for judicial custody.
