Ajay Patil bags a double

BANGALORE: Ajay Patil claimed a fine double in the under-16 section of the Wearhouse State-ranking badminton championship at the Sadashivanagar Club courts here on Thursday.

Patil won the singles title with a 21-19, 21-17 victory over Vinay Hari and later Patil teamed up with R.N. Suraj to win the doubles title as well.

The pair beat Karan and Jayanthi Gowda 17-21, 21-19, 21-12.

Rajas Jawalkar bagged the boys under-13 singles title beating Yashas Karthik 21-7, 21-9 in the final.

Boys Under-13 singles final: Rajas Jawalkar bt Yashasvi Karthik 21-7, 21-9.

Under-16 singles final: Ajay Patil bt Vinay Hari 21-19, 21-17. Doubles: Ajay Patil & Suraj bt Karan & Jayanth Gowda 17-21, 21-19, 21-12.

Under-19 singles pre-quarterfinals: Darshan Kulkarni bt Manish 23-21, 21-17; Jeevan bt Arun 21-16, 21-5; P. Naik bt Adarsh Kumar 21-6, 21-5; Dhruv Shanbag bt R.N. Suraj 21-14, 21-12; Venkatesh Prasad bt Santosh Kumar 21-17, 21-12.

Romio clinches title

A. Romio of Manipur clinched the gold in the men's foil individual event of the National fencing championship at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

In the final, Romio dominated his exchanges with compatriot Sovhraj and won at 15-11.

Earlier in the semifinals, Romio defeated Lakshmikanth of Karnataka 15-13 while Sovhraj prevailed over Shashidhar Singh (Karn) 11-8.

Other results (quarterfinals): Shashidhar Singh (Kar) bt Ranjith (Asm) 15-4; Sovhraj (Mnp) bt Kailash (Punj) 14-10; Lakshmikanth (Kar) bt Harpeeth (Punj) 15-14; A. Romio (Mnp) bt Tukaram (AP) 15-14.

Century Club badminton

Century Club will conduct its junior State ranking badminton tournament here from Jan. 20 to 23. The events include singles, doubles in boys and girls under-10, under-13 and under-16 categories.

T. Ramakrishna, Daulat Chabria and D.P. Vasishta are sponsoring the tournament.

Karnataka teams triumph

At Hubli, the Karnataka girls' and boys teams won the All India under-14 kabaddi tournament.

Karnataka boys defeated defending champions Delhi 51-22. Siddu Byakod and Srimant Byakod shone in Karnataka's win. Later, the Karnataka girls defeated Punjab 53-19.

Cricket tournament

An under-17 pre-university cricket tournament will be held at the NRA Ground here from Jan. 22 to 25. The winners of the Bangalore league will proceed to Mumbai for the final knockout phase from Feb. 13. For details, contact: S.K. Venkatesh (Ph: 9880200246).
