Rajkot: Five scalps in the Karnataka first innings did not satisfy the lively Sagar Jogiyani. The stumper's limbs must have been tired as he did duty for nearly 11 hours during which Karnataka posted 570 with its skipper Yere Goud pummelling a depleted Saurashtra line-up to muster an unconquered 171. Karnataka's last wicket did not fall until Goud and Udit Patel had put on 112. Saurashtra was rendered weak in the absence of its key bowler Rakesh Dhruv, but Jogiyani did not let the formidable total affect him. Enjoying one of the brightest seasons, Jogiyani (62 batting, 56b, 10x4, 1x6) stole the thunder in the closing session of the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group `A' league match at the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium on Thursday.
Exciting phase
Jogiyani's natural ways, essentially based on aggression, rubbed off on his left-handed partner, Kanaiya Vaghela, and in what has been the most entertaining phase of the match, Saurashtra took heavy penalty of the Karnataka pace and spin attack to rattle up 103 for no loss in 23 overs. Seamer B. Akhil and veteran spinner Sunil Joshi were given a semblance of respect, but Vinay Kumar, debutant Raju Bhatkal, who struck some big blows with the bat, and off-spinner Udit Patel scarcely appeared to have the resources to contain the rampaging Saurashtra opening pair. The local crowd, which cheered Rahul Dravid and wished him happy birthday, was up on its feet right through the last hour blitzkrieg which was carried out with power and precision. Jogiyani and Vaghela began in whirlwind fashion, hitting some brilliant shots. On a wicket with no trace of footmarks at both ends, the ball came at a predictable height and was easily punished. Absent in Karnataka's seam attack was a bowler of the calibre of Javagal Srinath or Venkatesh Prasad to exploit the wicket which is hard and with an even covering of grass.
Quick wickets
Earlier, Karnataka resumed at 329 for four and batted a few minutes past tea. Sandip Maniyar moved the ball away and produced a wicket with the new ball 10 overs old. Thilak Naidu, Akhil and Joshi departed quickly, but Bhatkal made 42 and added 64 for the eighth wicket with Goud. Thereafter, Goud and Patel frustrated Saurashtra with some bold shots. It was Goud's first century of the season. He had taken a run off the last ball on Wednesday and should have faced the first ball today. Somehow, the overnight batsmen went to the wrong ends and Naidu took strike first. Even the umpires did not notice the lapse. The scores: Karnataka 1st innings: B. Rowland c Jogiyani b Maniyar 1, R. Correction: In the story `Dravid's presence to bolster Karnataka', published in these columns on January 10, it was mentioned that K.P. Appanna is in the India under-19 team for Malaysia and New Zealand. He is only in the team for New Zealand. The error is regretted.
