UP IN ARMS: Fisherwomen shouting slogans at Jagadamba junction on Thursday. Photo: K. R. Deepak
VISAKHAPATNAM: Tension gripped Dibbapalem where a private port is coming up following an attack on the villagers allegedly by the police and followers of Pendurthy MLA Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy on Wednesday night. Enraged over the incident, the villagers said the port management was resorting to arm-twisting methods with the help of the local police and the MLA and took out a rally from the Jagadamba junction to the Collectorate on Thursday. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the officials demanding action against those who attacked them. The fishermen said that they were under pressure for leaving the village without any compensation and withdraw two writs filed in the High Court over irregularities in the finalisation of list of displaced persons for extending rehabilitation and resettlement package. The fishermen also criticised the arrest of N. Nookanna, Pydithalli, K. Somanna, Polaraju and others and demanded their unconditional release. They said the agreement signed by the port management, and Minister for Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna was a farce as genuine displaced persons would not be getting any rehabilitation under the compensation package.
