Reconstruction of Nagai port expedited

First phase to be over in a month

REBUILDING: Work on strengthening the north and south breakwater under way in Nagapattinam port.

Nagapattinam: The reconstruction of the tsunami-hit Nagapattinam port taken up at a cost of Rs.50.52 crore with Asian Development Bank assistance has picked up now after a recent inspection of the Minister for Highways, M.P.Saminathan, who is also in charge of Minor Ports.

The work to strengthen the north and south breakwater and extend the existing breakwater each by 200 metres has been expedited. Several loads of natural stones (boulders), brought from a quarry at Pudukottai, are being used to strengthen the breakwater.Dredging will be carried out between the north and south breakwater to facilitate big barges to bring the cargo from ships anchored about three km off the coast.The first phase of work costing Rs.10 crore will be completed in a month or so and the second phase, including construction of five cargo buildings will be taken up in two months.

As part of the port development work, the estuary of Kaduvayar river for a length of 1,5,75 metres leading to the port will be taken up for dredging and a protection wall built for a stretch of 650 metres.

The Collector, Tenkasi S.Jawahar, told The Hindu on Wednesday that reconstruction of tidal observatory and port control buildings, weigh bridge and perimeter wall that were damaged, would be taken up. He said that tenders had also been called for second phase of the work.
