Vigilance probe into graft charges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has ordered a Vigilance probe into the alleged financial irregularities and corruption in the Kerala Coir Workers' Welfare Fund Board, Alappuzha, during the United Democratic Front rule. The then Chief Executive of the Board P. Gopinathan Pillai was placed under suspension. The allegations include distributions of funds under the Mahila Coir Yojana to self-help groups. - Special Correspondent

Trains to be terminated at Dadar

Thiruvananthapuram: Two express trains from Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai Chathrapathi Sivaji Terminal (CST) would be terminated at Dadar till January 21 in view of the signalling work at Mumbai CST. According to a release, the trains are the Nagercoil-Mumbai Express and the Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai CST Weekly Express. — Staff Reporter

Doctors fail to join for duty

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Many doctors, who have received advices from the Public Service Commission to join Government service, are yet to report for work. Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy told journalists that they have been give time till Saturday to join for duty. - Special Correspondent

DySP office march

ALAPPUZHA: The National Development Front (NDF) organised a march to the office of the Alappuzha DySP on Wednesday demanding the arrest of culprits behind the alleged attack on NDF district convener Sudheer Punnapra's house. NDF supreme council member Yahya Thangal inaugurated the march. — Staff Reporter

Bodies found

THRISSUR: The bodies of a 21-year-old woman and her 10-month-old boy child were found in their house at Peramangalam on Wednesday. The woman was identified as Raji, wife of Rajesh of Pallikkattuvalappil in Muthuvara. — Staff Reporter

Power line falls on train

KOLLAM: An 11-kV line of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) snapped and fell on a Kollam-bound meter gauge train from Tirunelveli at Valacode, near Punalur, on Wednesday. Since it led to an immediate power failure, no one was injured in the incident, which occurred at 2 p.m. As soon the line fell, the train was brought to a halt. Senior KSEB and Railway officials rushed to the scene and inspected the situation, following which the train proceeded towards Kollam. The snapped line was restored in the evening. - Staff Reporter

Centenary of Veenapoovu PATHANAMTHITTA: The centenary of Kumaran Asan's masterpiece, Veenapoovu, was celebrated at the Town Hall here on Wednesday.

Poet Ettumaur Somadasan inaugurated the function, which was organised by the Banner Cultural Society. Prof. Somadasan said Veenapoovu was a turning point in the poetic life of Kumaran Asan. It was also regarded as the harbinger of romanticism in Malayalam poetry, he said. K.V. Thampi, society patron, presided over the function. Vazhamuttom Mohan recited Veenapoovu and N.K. Biju introduced the poem on the occasion. M.S. Umesh, R. Bhadran Pillai, Vinod Elakolloor and K.G. Anilkumar spoke. - Staff Reporter
