Tamil medium students stand to benefit now

Translation of scientific terms becomes reality

TIRUCHI: For students from non-English schools who have difficulty in comprehending scientific terms, a teacher from Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, Puthur, has come out with over 100 equivalent Tamil words.

A. Selvaraj, a Botany teacher, presented the material at the State-level science exhibition held at Madurai. His presentation, `Innovative methods in learning Botany,' has been selected for the zonal-level science exhibition to be conducted at Hubli this month.

Briefing on his project on creative teaching strategies, Mr. Selvaraj said that the students could learn faster if mind mapping and mnemonics were included in the core curriculum.

For over six years, Mr. Selvaraj has been handling classes based on three mapping methods such as mind, concept and information maps. Drawing parallels between VIBGYOR and stages of cell division, he has derived a mnemonic for five stages of cell division and termed it as IPSAT.

"It's easier for students to commit simple terms to memory than paragraphs of complex words," he said.

He has classified every sentence of the book into fact, process, procedure and structure mapping, to make students understand the concepts with clarity. "This is more of a self-instructional material. I will let the students to sort the lessons in their own way," he said.

At the exhibition, Mr. Selvaraj presented abridged scientific terms in Tamil. "Anatomy and Taxonomy has quite a lot of Tamil entries. But since biotechnology is an up-and-coming field, the syllabus just has the transliteration of the English words."
