Devotees take holy dip in sea off Rameswaram

RAMANATHAPURAM: Thousands of devotees took a holy dip in the waters off Rameswaram on the occasion of auspicious `Thai Amavasai' on Thursday.

The devotees, who converged from different parts of the country and stayed overnight in and around Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, visited the Agnitheerthakadarkarai in the early morning and offered special pujas to their forefathers.

Procession

Earlier, the idols of Lord Siva, Rama and Seetha were brought to the Agnitheerthakadarkarai in a procession and special pujas and abhishekams were performed. Some devotees donated cows to the temple.

The devotees also visited Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple and took holy bath at the 22 theerthams.

A huge crowd was also seen at Dhanushkodi, Muhuntharayarchatram, Sethukarai and Devipattinam in the district. Though there was no public transport facility to Dhanushkodi from Muhuntharayarchatram, many paid exorbitant fare for private vehicles to to reach Dhanuhskodi to perform pujas to their ancestors.

Hotels, halls, chaultries and restaurants in Rameswaram were packed to capacity.
