Elections to local bodies to be held on February 8

TIRUCHI: The State Election Commission has notified elections on February 8 to local bodies and wards of local bodies in the district where polls could not be held during the Statewide exercise last year.

Elections will be held in all the 18 wards of the Koothapar town panchayat and in the sixth ward of Pullambadi town panchayat; Sorathur panchayat (for the post of president); wards of Govindapuram in Thuraiyur panchayat union; wards of Pazhuvalanji panchayat in Marungapuri panchayat union; and wards of Akalanganallur and R. Valavanur panchayat in Lalgudi panchayat union.

A press release issued here on Thursday by the district administration said that nominations will be accepted between 11.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. from January 19 to 27. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 29 and withdrawal of nominations will be accepted on January 31 till 3.00 p.m.

Counting of votes will take place on February 9, the day after elections.

The election process will come to an end on February 10.

On February 19, ward members of Koothapar town panchayat will be sworn in. The president and vice-president of the local body will be elected the same day, the release said.
