The fellowships are for nine regional languages at the State-level and English at the national level. According to a press release from People's Watch, a Madurai-based human rights organisation, the implementing organisation of the national project, the State-level fellowships are offered in memory of Mukundan Menon. The fellowships will be for a period of 20 months from April 1, 2007. These will be awarded to journalists working in leading newspapers, magazines and human rights journals. The applicants should be in the age group of 30 to 40 years and should have written articles covering human rights issues. The fellows will get Rs.5,000 per month at the State level and Rs.10,000 per month at the national level. There are 9 regional fellowships for Hindi (3), Bengali (1), Oriya (1), Tamil (1), Malayalam (1), Telugu (1) and Kannada (1) print journalists. The project is implemented by European Union, Friedrich Naumann Stiftung and People's Watch to initiate and model a national campaign for the prevention of torture in India, with a specific focus on torture practices of the police. Applications, with a write up of not less than 1000 words on one of the topics (Police and custodial torture in prisons and lock ups, Caste discrimination and related torture, Violence against women and Corporal punishment), should be sent with a 500-word note on why the journalist is interested in the topic to no2torture@pwtn.org before February 15.
