CHENNAI: The Railway Protection Force post at the Chennai Central, has achieved the distinction of getting ISO-9001: 2000 certification. The certification was handed over to G.M. Eswara Rao, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Chennai, by a representative of the International Certifications Services, at a function here on Friday. Commending the Chennai unit for achieving the distinct honour, A.K. Suri, Director-General of RPF, said getting the certification was not an end by itself but only a beginning. Now the unit had not only to maintain the standard but also improve it. He wanted the other posts of RPF would emulate Chennai unit and try to standardise their functioning. Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese said the number of RPF personnel was limited compared to the volume of passenger and freight traffic. At present, there were only 65,000 RPF police personnel while the passenger traffic was to the tune of 12 million and freight traffic of the order of 750 million tonnes. This indicated the need for increasing the RPF manpower. Stressing the need for modernisation of RPF, he said it was imperative in the wake of increased terrorist activities G.M.P. Reddy, Chief Security Commissioner, Southern Railway, claimed that the zone had taken pioneering steps in providing security to passengers. It was the first to introduce a bomb detection squad, dog squad, and surveillance cameras in major stations. Mr. Rao said it had been proposed to procure sufficient number of doorframe metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors for conducting effective anti-sabotage checks. Soon it would procure luggage scanners for Chennai Central. G. Venkatraman of International Certifications Services said the unit would have to be more responsible as the perceptions and expectations of the people would also be more as the unit had obtained the certification.
