Minister inaugurates the three-day extravaganza

CHENNAI : `Cadofest', a major fest for cadets in the city, has touched a milestone.

National Cadet Corps students from various colleges gathered to celebrate the silver jubilee year of the inter-collegiate competition at DDGD Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam on Friday.

The college was teeming with cadets clad in khaki uniforms from 15 colleges all set to swing into action and prove their prowess at the various events organised at the three-day fest.

Inaugurating the fest, Environment and Sports Minister T. P. M. Mohideen Khan, who highlighted the role of NCC training in motivating the students to choose careers for national security, said steps would be taken to provide a permanent site for conducting NCC camps.

The Government has allotted Rs.8.36 lakh last year towards NCC training. There was a proposal to allot Rs. 45 lakh this year for the cause, he added.

He, later, released the NCC newsletter of DDGD Vaishnav College.

Besides the contingent and individual drill, a challenging event, `Samarvir', a replica of selection procedure of armed forces, has been introduced this year.

About 300 cadets were expected to participate in the events. The first-day contests would test students' `word of command' and their general knowledge.

Cadets would also set out for `Treasure Hunt' and take up obstacles such as wall climbing. More action would follow during the weekend contests, which would have cadets quizzing, reading maps and debating. Other competitions include airmanship and field craft.

`Cherry Blossom' would be an interesting contest where the cadets would be ranked for perfect uniforms.

V. Subramani, director, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andaman Nicobar Directorate and K.L.Ramachandran, principal-in charge of the college, participated.
