Kidney donor complains of cheating
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: The Chennai police have received a complaint of cheating from a woman who had reportedly donated her kidney for a price, but had not got the money promised.
According to Mallika, wife of Siva, residing at Tondiarpet, she had donated her kidney in Madurai on November 22, 2004. A broker lured her to donate her organ by promising her Rs 1.50 lakh in return.
She claimed that the broker had asked her to register her name as Sarada with the hospital. After undergoing the transplant procedure, she said that the broker paid her Rs 30,000 in Tiruchi and promised to pay the balance Rs 1.20 lakh at Chennai. Since even after two years the broker had not kept his promise, she approached the police seeking intervention here on Friday.
When contacted, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran said that as the kidney racket case had been transferred to the CB-CID police for investigation on Thursday following a government order, the petition received from Mallika would be handed over to the authorities concerned.
