Youth has a role to play: Gulzar

Corporation to implement schemes based on master plan


  • Each individual should do soul-searching, says Mayor
  • Youth urged to emulate Gandhiji

    VIJAYAWADA: Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar has urged people to contribute their mite in the city development drive taken up by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

    Addressing a Republic Day meeting here on Friday after hoisting the national tricolour, Mr. Gulzar said the corporation was keen on implementing schemes that would pave the way for growth based on the master plan drawn for the city's all-round development. The role of the youth was crucial in the drive, which was aimed at improving the living standards of people in the city limits.

    Mayor Mallika Begum said each individual must do some soul-searching to identify his role in the development activity.

    Water problem

    It was the responsibility of parents to groom their children into good citizens, she maintained. Referring to the drinking water problem in the city, she said it was unfortunate that the locals continued to suffer in the absence of adequate drinking water resources despite the city being located on the banks of the Krishna.

    She said the Government was spending funds to the tune of crores of rupees to solve drinking water problem and people across the State should strengthen its hands by extending their cooperation.

    Deputy Mayor Anne Prasanna and other corporators were present.

    Founder president of Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Legal Cell B.V. Ranga Rao hoisted the national flag at the office of the cell at Gandhinagar to mark the 58th Republic Day. After garlanding a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, Mr. Rao addressed a meeting and urged the youth to emulate Gandhiji. He said the principles adopted by the Father of the Nation were relevant even to this day.

    Members of the Samata Youth Federation, Samata Students' Federation and Child Rights' Group jointly celebrated the day by unfurling the national flag on the premises of the office of Janata Dal (United).

    Members of the City Congress Committee, led by their president P. Sominaidu, celebrated Republic Day by hoisting the national flag at Andhra Ratna Bhavan. Mayor Mallika Begum and chairman of the Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri - Urban Development Authority Malladi Vishnu and others were present. Member of the Krishna district Consumer Forum P.V.V. Satyanarayana Murthy unfurled the tricolour at the Lok Satta office as part of Republic Day celebrations by the district unit.
