Congress upbeat; TDP sceptical

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The response of the main political parties to the Election Commission's announcement of poll schedule for revival of the Legislative Council was on expected lines on Thursday with the Congress hailing it and the Telugu Desam reiterating its opposition on the ground that it would not serve any purpose.

Finance and Legislative Affairs Minister K. Rosaiah welcomed it and said that process of constituting the House would be completed as per the schedule.

TDP general secretary Kadiam Srihari said the revival of Council would not benefit people. It would be a rehabilitation centre for disgruntled and dissident Congressmen. Besides, the Upper House could not bypass the Assembly proceedings and any amendment suggested by it would have to be ratified by the Assembly.

The CPI(M) State Committee has decided to participate in the elections to the Council. The party, however, would decide in the next few days on the stand to be taken in extending support to contestants of Graduates and Teachers' constituencies.

State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya also welcomed the announcement although it got delayed due to Government's "inefficiency."

TRS to issue whip

Senior TRS leader A. Narendra said the party would issue a whip to its MLAs for supporting candidates in the elections.

However, the party has not yet decided whom to support. In the case of graduates, teachers and local bodies constituencies, the party would not officially back any candidate.

TRS electors were free to decide their choice, he added.
