CHENNAI: Around 69 lakh children under the age of five years were administered polio drops all over the State during the second round of the pulse polio campaign, which got under way on Sunday. A total of 1.24 lakh workers from various agencies such as civic bodies, anganwadis, school teachers, students and volunteers from social service organisations administered the vaccine in 40,339 booths set up at government hospitals, primary health centres, noon meal centres, schools and public places.
95 per cent coverage
"Around 95 per cent coverage was achieved on the first day. On the second and third days, door-to-door campaigns will be undertaken to cover the other children," P. Padmanabhan, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, said. In Chennai alone, around 4,78,500 children were administered the vaccine in 1126 booths. Around 5,000 workers were involved in the task. Around 71 lakh children had benefited from various pulse polio drives so far and the State had attained a record 100 per cent coverage, a government release said. Booths were also set up at bus stands, railway stations, airports, temples and tourist spots to enable travellers and tourists to vaccinate their children. The first round of pulse polio was conducted on January 7.
