N.C. Raghavachari
CHENNAI: Senior advocate, philanthropist and former Member of the Legislative Council N.C. Raghavachari passed away at his residence here on Sunday. He was 89. Mr. Raghavachari was born in Nellore (his grandfather was a judge there) on March 26, 1918. After completing his schooling in Chennai at The Hindu High School and B.A. Economics and B.L. degree, he enrolled as an advocate in the Madras High Court in August 1942. NCR, as he was popularly known, became a senior advocate in November 1971. He appeared in important constitutional cases for senior leaders, including K. Kamaraj, Rajaji, and M.G. Ramachandran. He was also the sole executor of the will of M.G. Ramachandran. The former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi consulted Mr. Raghavachari regarding the Shah Commission. Mr. Raghavachari, who completed 50 years as a lawyer in August 1992, served as the senior standing counsel for various organisations of the State Government and many universities.

He was associated with several educational and charitable institutions, involved in social welfare activities, and was recipient of many awards, including the `Life Time Achievement award' of the Rotary Club of Madras Mylapore for establishing a free old age home. He was also a sports enthusiast. According to family members, Mr. Raghavachari was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago. He is survived by his wife, four sons and a daughter. The cremation was held in the evening.
