CHENNAI : As part of its efforts to tone up its operations in the city, the Postal department has decided to prune the number of postal delivery areas. At present, there are 120 areas and the authorities want to bring the number down to around 100. As a result, some postal delivery areas are being merged with nearby areas. Pazhavanthangal, having the Postal Index Number (PIN) of 600114, has been merged with Nanganallur (600061). Likewise, areas covered by the Anna University post office (600025) have been transferred to IIT (600036) and Choolai (600112) to Vepery (600007). Shortly, the localities till now under the control of Sowcarpet (600 079) and Aminjikarai (600029) will go to General Post Office (600 001) and Shenoy Nagar (600030) respectively. In effect, the areas that were merged with the others will no longer have separate PIN codes. T. Paneerselvam, postmaster general of Chennai Region, explains that the volume of mail traffic, population density and availability of land or buildings to house delivery post offices are among the factors taken into account, while restructuring the postal delivery system. He also points out that in a bigger metropolitan such as Mumbai, there are around 80 PIN codes. The process has just been initiated and there is scope for fine tuning it, Mr. Paneerselvam adds.
