CHENNAI : Devotees of the Kanchi Paramacharya gathered at the University of Madras Centenary Hall on Sunday to attend the `Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal Peetarohana Shatabdi Poorthi Mahotsava'.

February 13, 2006, marked the beginning of the 100th year since the Kanchi Paramacharya accepted Sanyasa dharma and became the 68th head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, in 1907. Sunday's celebration marked the completion of the yearlong tribute to the saint.

Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi emphasised the importance of Guru bhakthi. "It is our tradition to bow to the matha, pitha, guru and deivam (mother, father, teacher and God)," he said.

He lauded the efforts of the team, which was working out of Mumbai and was coordinating with volunteers in other parts of the country, to ensure the celebration was a success.

The function was organised by Mumbai-based Sri Kanchi Mahaswamigal Peetarohana Shatabdi Mahotsav Trust, along with the Sri Kanchi Kamakotipeetam Chennapuri Baktha Jana Samajam, Chennai. V. Shankar, secretary of the Trust, recalled the Paramacharya's prowess in several languages.

He was an authority on subjects ranging from Hindu law and metaphysics to music, dance and architecture, Mr. Sankar added.

Senior scholar Parasurama Ganapadigal was honoured with the `Centenary Puraskar Award'.

Winners of various competitions held during the year received prizes.

An exhibition featuring rare photographs of the Paramacharya was put up at the venue.

Translations of `Deivathin Kural' and other publications were also made available.
