Flyover work hampers traffic at Perambur

CHENNAI: North Chennai residents taking one of the carriageways of the Perambur subway in the peak hours in the morning would do well to start early over the next two weeks.

The carriageway was closed on Monday to facilitate work on the much-awaited flyover project. Last week, the MTC announced changes in its services ahead of the move.

The traffic police, though, did not come out with new traffic arrangement and maps to create awareness.

Result: hundreds of commuters who travel to Moolakadai and further via Perambur were found struggling, as the detour prolongs the travel by at least 3 km. Several office-goers were seen arguing with traffic policeman on duty.

"Soil tests are essential for the construction work to take off," Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said. "We will open up the subway after two weeks but will be closing it later when we will have to construct pillars for the flyover," he said.

The DMK government re-launched the flyover project after it came to power last November.
