Sports Reporter

PROUD MOMENT: Joseph Chakola (left) and Anirbhan Lahiri (both India `A') and Jasjeet Singh and Shaurya Singh (India `B') pose with trophies.

Coimbatore: It turned out to be an excellent day for local lad Joseph Chakola and Bangalore's Anirbhan Lahiri.

Representing India `A', the duo played a spectacular round to pocket the international team event title in the 106th Royal Challenge all-India amateur golf championship atthe par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course in Chettipalayam, near here on Tuesday.

Lahiri returned a level-par 72 in the second round and Chakola a 74 to help India `A' finish on top with a total of 292 in the two-day curtain-raising event of the second oldest golf tournament in the World after the British Open. To make it all the more special, Jasjeet Singh (74) and Shaurya Singh (74) of India `B' staged a strong comeback to grab the second spot at 298, one shot ahead of Bangladesh, which finished third largely due to the efforts of Mohammed Shahid, who returned a card of two-over 74.South Africa had something to cheer about as Ruan Botha came up with the day's best individual performance with a 71. But for a fluffed round of 82 by Branden Grace, the team would have well given the Indians a run for their money.

The scores (after second day): 292 India `A' (Anirban Lahiri 72+72, Joseph Chakola 74+74); 298 India `B' (Shaurya Singh 74+74, Jasjeet Singh 76+74); 299 Bangladesh (Mohammad Siddikur 73+76, Mohammad Shahid 76+74); 302 South Africa (Branden Grace 74+82, Ruan Botha 75+71), Sri Lanka (K. Prabagaran 73+76, Mithun Perera 76+77); 309 Pakistan (Adil Jahangir 75+80, Tariq Mehmood 77+77).
