HYDERABAD: A labourer's leg was blown off when electric detonators he was carrying went off on Langer Houz main road sending panic waves in the area on Tuesday. He was rushed to the Osmania General Hospital where doctors said his condition was out of danger. Somaiah, the 42-year-old victim, was walking on the road when the explosion occurred around 4.30 p.m. near NTR statue. Wires found at the blast site led police to believe that he was carrying 30 to 50 electric detonators in a nylon bag. "Nylon material produces static electricity. Apparently, this triggered the detonators in the bag," Asifnagar ACP B. Mahender Reddy said. Hailing from Chintur village of Nalgonda district, Somaiah was presently living at Shankarpally in Ranga Reddy district.
Huge rocks
Though not a licensed worker, he was being engaged to blast huge rocks by contractors. Alerted by the Langer Houz police about the explosion, their counterparts in Shankarpally raided Somaiah's house only to find 65 gelatine sticks and two bundles of fuse wire inside. A case under section 286 (negligent handling of explosive substances) and sections three and five of Explosive Substances Act was registered.
