P. S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: The Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has agreed in principle that Muslim countries should cut off diplomatic links with Israel, according to Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar. Malaysia is the OIC Chair. Conceding that such initiative was difficult to implement, Mr. Hamid on Saturday said the question was discussed at the recent extraordinary session of the OIC Foreign Ministers in Jeddah. He said Malaysia had "suggested that Islamic countries having diplomatic relations with Israel sever the ties or recall their Ambassadors temporarily to show that we are serious and do not engage in mere empty talk." The proposal was sparked by the concern over Israel's "aggression" in regard to the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
