NEW DELHI: Devyani Rana, the woman believed to have unwittingly sparked the palace massacre in Kathmandu in 2001, married Aishwarya Singh, grandson of Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh, at a gala wedding here on Friday, an official at the Minister's residence said. Ms. Rana was linked to Nepal's crown prince Dipendra, who, in a fit of rage, is said to have killed nine members of the royal family, including his father and mother then king and queen of Nepal for refusing to let him marry her. He later shot himself and died in hospital. An official inquiry into the massacre said Dipendra killed the royal family members in a state of intoxication. Ms. Rana had spent much of the past six years in Europe. "The palace massacre was an unimaginable tragedy that could befall anyone," Yubaraj Ghimire, editor of the Nepali magazine Samay, said. "Many people sympathise with Devyani. Her marriage, many hope, would help her leave the tragedy behind." Ms. Rana is the daughter of Pashupati Shumsher Rana, a member of an aristocratic family of Nepal and a former Minister. At the wedding, a royal band played music while chefs for the feast were flown in from Lucknow and Kathmandu. Among the top leaders who attended the wedding were: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chaterjee, the former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Congress leader Karan Singh and the former External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh. Agencies
