On new guidelines for upkeep of bungalows in Luteyns' Zone

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the Centre on its submission that it had reduced the number of violators of building by-laws in Lutyens' Zone here from 216 to 71 after a new set of guidelines for upkeep of these sprawling bungalows came into force last April 18.

The Court issued the direction when counsel for the Union Government submitted that the number of violators had come down to 71 following the coming into effect of the new guidelines.

Questioning the change of the guidelines, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna also directed the Centre to file an action-taken-report by April 25.

The Court has been hearing a suo motu petition on the basis of media reports about alterations and constructions carried out by certain occupants, including Ministers and MPs, of these bungalows without prior permission of the Central Public Works Department and in violation of the guidelines governing the maintenance of these bungalows.

It has directed the Union Urban Development Ministry to remove all the illegal alterations and constructions in these bungalows.
