NEW DELHI: Continuing with their demolition drive against unauthorised constructions in the busy INA Market here on Wednesday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi along with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Land and Development Office pulled down over 40 illegal shops and sheds besides unauthorised extensions in various properties.

The drive is being carried out at the behest of the Delhi High Court-appointed Monitoring Committee.

According to a senior MCD official, the demolition action against shops that had come up on public land has almost been completed. However, the drive would continue against those who have carried out unauthorised extensions on their properties.

Most shopkeepers removed unauthorised constructions on their own and there were no protests on Wednesday, the MCD official said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to stay the ongoing demolition of illegal encroachments.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Rekha Sharma directed a group of shopkeepers of the market, petitioners in the matter, to approach the Court-appointed Monitoring Committee with their plea.

The shopkeepers had sought a stay on the demolition drive launched by the MCD on Tuesday submitting that the Centre was planning to develop the market and regularise their shops.
