Beijing: Agitated over the U.S. decision to sell sophisticated arms to Taiwan, China on Sunday asked Washington not to send ``wrong'' signals that will encourage pro-independence forces in Taipei. The strong message was conveyed by a host of Chinese officials, including State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, who met U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte. Mr. Tang urged the U.S. not to send wrong signals to Taiwan separatists. ``The activities of Taiwan separatists pose a major threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,'' he said. He hoped the U.S. would keep its promise to safeguard the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait and its relationship with China. Mr. Negroponte's visit comes at a time of controversy about planned U.S. sales of more than 400 missiles worth $421 million to Taiwan. Mr. Negroponte also met Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo on Saturday. The Chinese official also asked the U.S. side to stop selling weapons to Taiwan. Mr. Li said China was ready to make joint efforts with the U.S. to properly handle disputes and sensitive issues, especially the Taiwan issue. PTI
