Tuticorin: Eastern Railway women won a berth in the super league of the National Volleyball League Championship to be held in Kochi. Eastern Railway, after losing the first set, bounced back to win 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 in the last match of the four-team women's league (Preliminary III) for its third win and the Sterlite Trophy here on Sunday. KSEB finished second losing only to Eastern Railway. Eastern Railway had in its ranks Joshi Sapna, Sena Jhilata, both of them being attackers of high standard with ability for blockings also. KSEB also had P.V. Sheeba, and S. Aswini Kumar, who were equally good, but Eastern Railway had the better say at the finish.
S. Railway posts win
Southern Railway men scored a creditable 25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21 victory in 82 minutes over the fancied ONGC earlier to top the five-team league table with seven points (three wins and a loss) along with Muthoot Group Volleyball Club, Kerala. However, the two men's teams qualifying for the super-league will be known only after the last match between IOB and ONGC as IOB has five points as against ONGC's three, which has already lost the race. If IOB wins, three teams will be on par with seven points each and the two qualifying teams will de decided on quotient. If ONGC wins, Southern Railway and Muthoot automatically qualify with seven points each. It was a disappointing outing for ONGC, which came here with great hopes. The team, consisting of many internationals, did not function effectively mainly to the inability of its skipper Rahul, who was suffering from back pain. He was used only sparingly. Strong net-blocks from Sivarajan and Sunil Kumar and thundering smashes and placements by Mukesh Lal and James John to the varied settings of international Kapil Dev stood in good stead for Railway. In another women's match Dr. Sivanthi Club, Chennai, beat Kerala State Police 25-18, 25-18, 25-20. Sports Correspondent
