HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy directed the Panchayat Raj department to chalk out plans for `complete carpeting' of all damaged BT (black top) roads in rural areas on Monday.
Grant-oriented
Reviewing the status of works under Pradhan Manthri Gram Sadak Yojana, he said priority must be given to the programme since it was a grant-oriented programme. Enough engineering staff should be deployed for exclusive supervision so that the targets were met, he said. Noting that the State was doing better with regard to the upgradation and renewal of rural roads, he said all habitations must be connected with standard roads by the end of 2009. All habitations with a population of 500 persons (250 in case of tribal population) should come under its gambit, he said. Pointing out that 68,854 kms of rural road network was identified as core-network, he asked the officials to prepare a district-wise priority list in the descending order in consultation with the State Transport Authority.
