HYDERABAD: Faced with archaic and crumbling drinking water supply infrastructure, the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to lay new pipelines in the tail end areas of the old city and adjoining municipalities where the supply pressure and frequency are poor. The Rs. 250-crore project will entail building of new reservoirs and pipelines and carrying out repairs on the existing network. In all probability, the work will be launched in June. Survey work is on in Chanchalguda, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura and Asifnagar localities, HMWSSB officials say.
Special package
The Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who visited the old city in October last, announced a Rs. 100-crore special package for improving the drinking water supply network, which would enable the water board to partly fund the new pipeline works. The old city gets about 75 million gallons per day (MGD) supply. But, most part of the distribution network dates back to the Nizam's time and at places, the network was not strong enough to withstand heavy water pressure, making officials cut down on the supply volume.
