Muslim Jung Bridge may be a reality soon

Staff Reporter

Land acquisition through; legal tangles solved

SOME HOPE: The much-delayed Muslim Jung Bridge in the old city is expected to be completed in two months.

HYDERABAD: Muslim Jung Bridge, another of those delayed projects of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) that remains incomplete over the years, may finally see the light of the day.

Exactly after a decade of being proposed as a parallel bridge to the Muslim Jung Pul, the second oldest bridge after Puranapul, the Rs. 7-crore structure may be ready in two months.

Additional Commissioner (Planning & Projects) K. Dhananjaya Reddy said on Monday that acquisition of land of three private properties near the City College was almost through as also the shifting of cowshed on the other side of Goshamahal.

The corporation agreed to construct an alternative shed in a nearby land of some 300 sq.yards belonging to the Endowments Department at its own cost and also pay the land price to be decided by the Collector. Dismantling of the old shed had begun.

Vast portion of the six-lane bridge to reduce congestion on other bridges across the Musi was completed long ago but construction of ramps connecting to roads on both sides could not be taken up because of obstructions.

Legal tangle

One of the private properties near the college had got into a legal tangle when the owner gave his consent but the tenant approached the court.

This has been sorted out. Parts of some properties on both ends are to also be acquired for junction improvements.

The cow shed was being maintained by the Traffic Police. In a meeting conducted by Minister for Information and Public Relations Mohd. Ali Shabbir, local legislator M. Mukesh and officials of the MCH, Traffic Police and district collectorate, the hitch was amicably settled.

Originally, the shed was to be moved to Ziaguda but it fell through, as it was near the site for the proposed modern slaughterhouse.

Fresh tenders were called again in 2004 before the obstructions on either side delayed the work. Meanwhile, MCH also gave clearance for construction of another four-lane bridge connecting the racecourse road to Golnaka at a cost of Rs. 4.5 crores.
