"Indian projects are very inspiring"

Says U.K.-based organisation "Drug and alcohol rehabilitation projects are among the best in the world "

MADURAI: Many projects implemented for the benefit of weaker sections in the country are worth replicating in other parts of the world, according to Global Link Initiative (GLI), a United Kingdom-based non-profit organisation.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday, the organisation's Chairman, Robin Rowland, termed Indian projects as "truly inspiring."

The organisation conducted its second meeting of non-governmental organisations and institutions working in south Tamil Nadu in association with Goodwill Social Work Centre here on Wednesday.

Mr. Rowland said that the GLI focussed on imparting knowledge to grass root workers and networking different organisations around the world so that they could share their experience.

He said that 317 administrators representing 257 organisations in 15 districts across the State participated in the conference.

The work, undertaken by institutions here, such as setting up libraries in remote villages, rehabilitation of drug addicts and mentally challenged were applicable all over the world.

When different organisations come together, he said, viable and sustainable solutions to deal with community problems would emerge.

Martin Blakebrough, member of the organisation's International Advisory Board, described the drug and alcohol rehabilitation projects in the country as among the best in the world. Sujata Ganega from Support, a Mumbai-based organisation, said that her organisation had the expertise in dealing with child drug addicts on the streets of Mumbai through decades of experience.

"The models developed by us should be spread around the world," she said.
