MADURAI: The bane of globalisation was that it had resulted in everything getting commercialised and had made people more money minded, national president of Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), J. Alexander, said . Virtues such as sharing were fading away with people wanting to consume more and more, he lamented. Mr. Alexander was addressing a function at the YMCA Madurai Services Centre for the Hearing Impaired to inaugurate the second phase of its working women's hostel and construction of second phase of school building. He said that people should learn to respect other religious practices while adhering to their own in order to foster communal harmony. He lauded the team of YMCA, Madurai unit for training the hearing impaired and helping them blend into the society. S. Suyambu, general secretary, YMCA Madurai, said that from a modest beginning with just 22 students in 1971, at present it had more than 300 students and 45 teachers. "Over the years, it has enabled hundreds of hearing impaired students to have good education and a modest life. Twenty-nine girls and 30 boys presently pursue their education in regular schools," he said. Highlighting the work rendered by the Skills Training Centre, Mr. Suyambu said that it imparted training in bakery and tailoring for dropouts and graduates. The placement cell helps them gain employment and lead a productive life, he said. Rt. Rev. A. Christopher Asir, Bishop, C.S.IDiocese of Madurai - Ramnad , was present.
