MADURAI: The e-agriculture concept bringing farmers into information technology connectivity has become a reality here, thanks to the initiative of Agricultural College and Research Institute (ACRI) and Dhan Foundation.

About 50 village kiosks functioning under the auspices of the Dhan Foundation were connected to the ACRI through video-conferencing facility by which farmers will be able to get online advise on agriculture from scientists and experts.

C. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University-Coimbatore, launched the video conferencing facility on the ACRI campus on Sunday and interacted with farmers from places such as Alanganallur and Thiruvathavur.

Agriculture experts will be available online twice a week to answer the queries of farmers on crops, yield, fertilizers etc.

The Vice-Chancellor told reporters that the agriculture scientists would be able to provide suggestions and timely information to farmers with the information and communication technology link. Village information centres in Melur, Kottampatty and Alanganallur blocks were now linked to the facility of e-consultation on agriculture.

The Executive Director of Dhan Foundation, M.P. Vasimalai, and the ACRI Dean, K. Ramamoorthy, were present at the inaugural function.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor also inaugurated farm mechanisation scheme taken up under the `Mega Seed' project of Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) at the agricultural college here.

According to Dr. Ramamoorthy, the ICAR allotted Rs.1.09 crore to the ACRI, Madurai, for infrastructure development in conditioned seed stores, seed processing unit and farm implements for farm mechanisation.
