CHENNAI: Fewer number of seats will be available in BE, MBA and MCA courses in the State this year as per the updated approval list of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) released on Wednesday. Apart from slashing the number of seats, the AICTE has also withheld admissions to thousands of seats in various institutions, pending receipt of a compliance report by institutions or incomplete information provided. While the numbers of engineering seats are down by 2980, MCA intake has been slashed by 250 seats and MBA intake by 60. Approval is pending for as many as 4,560 engineering, 965 MBA and 1420 MCA seats. The AICTE has also imposed a `no admission' restriction on 225 engineering seats in Seethai Ammal Engineering College, Sivaganga, and 60 MCA seats in Erode Arts College. Every year, the AICTE assesses seat intake in institutions, based on several quality-determining parameters like infrastructure and faculty availability. As of last year, the total engineering seats in the State was 78,801. The impact of the loss of nearly 3,000 seats and non-approval for several thousand others on this year's engineering admissions remain to be seen. Last year, nearly 58,000 engineering seats were available under the single window system.
`Pending approval'
Among the colleges whose seats have been put on the `pending approval' list are the Crescent Engineering College, Vandalur (671 seats), the Bharathidasan Institute of Engineering and Technology of the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, (300 seats) and the RMK Engineering College, Tiruvallur (730 seats). Sixty MBA seats have been approved for Alagappa University, Karaikkudi, for which approval had been held back last year. At the prestigious Bharathidasan Institute of Management, the School of Excellence of Bharathidasan, the seats have been slashed from 120 to 90. Annamalai University has lost 30 seats from the previous 60; Thiagarajar School of Management, Madurai, now has only 90 seats as against last year's 120, Vel's College of Science, Kancheepuram, 90 seats (120 last year). For MCA seats, approval has been granted for 60 seats at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi. Chennai-based Guru Shree Shanti Vijai Jain's College for Women, Vepery, and Ethiraj College for Women can now admit only 45 students and 30 students respectively (as against 60 and 45 respectively last year). The seat intake has also gone down in Hindustan College of Engineering, Kancheepuram, from 60 to 45; The Measi Institute of Information Technology, Chennai, from 60 to 45; Shanmugha Industries Arts and Science College, Tiruvannamalai, from 30 to 25; AVS College of Science, Salem, from 60 to 30; Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College, Tiruchi, from 60 to 45; Sun College of Engineering and Technology, Kanyakumari, from 120 to 60 and Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, from 60 to 45.
