CHENNAI : More than Rs. 1.60 crore of outstanding pension due to former employees of the Chennai Corporation was distributed on Thursday by Mayor M. Subramanian at a grievance day meeting for the pensioners. The Mayor also received around 150 petitions on issues concerning the pension payment, from other former employees at the meet that many of the speakers described as a long-felt need. Pensioners and their family members queued outside the Ripon Building well ahead to get the grievances redressed and avail themselves of the benefits at the meet held in the afternoon. While some received cheques for a few thousand rupees, there were also those who got over a lakh of rupee as payment to them was not made for as long as 12 years. Mr. Subramanian promised to settle all complaints relating to pension payment within three months. He pointed out that as many as 800 people were facing problems in receiving their pension, mainly because several files were left unattended at zonal offices. With instructions issued to zonal offices, these should be cleared soon. A total of 168 persons were given cheques for outstanding pension amounts. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said action would be taken to ensure that such delays in the pension payment do not recur.
