MUNICH: Philipp Kohlschreiber won his first title on Sunday by beating doubles partner Mikhail Youzhny 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the BMW Open. The 23-year-old German denied the third-seed Russian his fourth title, needing four match points to close out the match. He became the first German winner of the clay-court event since Michael Stich in 1994. Kohlschreiber will break into the top 40 for the first time on Monday when the new rankings are released.
Bhupathi-Stepanek lose
Earlier on Saturday night Mahesh Bhupathi and Radek Stepanek bowed out of the doubles after a three-set loss in the semifinals. The Indo-Czech pair went down 6-4, 3-6, 8-10 to Russia's Mikhail Youzhny and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. At Oeiras (Portugal), Greta Arn of Germany won the Estoril Open on Sunday after rallying to beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Arn saved three match points in the third set before forcing the tie-breaker, where the 176th-ranked German broke Azarenka three times.
