Army Ordnance Corps defeats SEC Railway

Tuticorin: Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), Andhra beat South East Central Railway, Bilaspur, in the three-team Group `D' league in the men's section of the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Trophy all-India basketball tournament organised by the TDBA and TBA at the Tharuvai Stadium, here on Sunday.

In the women's four-team Group `B' league, KSEB, Thiruvanthapuram, overpowered South Central Railway, Secunderabad, 56-33.

The results: Men: Group `D': AOC, Andhra, 60 (Siva Nagaraju 21, Sanjay 10) bt SEC Railway, Bilaspur, 49 (Kannan 10).

Women: Group `B': KSEB, Thiruvanthpuram, 56 (Seena 11, Litty 10) bt South Central Railway, Secunderabad, 33 (Kamaljeet 15, Balwinder 5).

Saturday's results: Men: Group `A': Indian Army, Delhi, 66 (Pramod Kumar 18, Rajesh 10) bt Armed Police, Madurai, 41 (Chandramohan 17); Group `C': Punjab State team 75 (Mishra 22, Preetinder Singh 21) bt South Central Railway, Secunderabad, 55 (Abrham 12); Group `D': Vijaya Bank, Bangalore, 65 (Murali 17, Anraf 12, Rony 12) bt SEC Railway, Bilaspur, 49 (Devandra Yadav 14, Vinoth 13).

Women: Western Railway, Mumbai, 77 (Ivy Jackson 25, Suji Kurian 20) bt South Western Railway, Hubli, 55 (Sumalatha 13, Sumitha 10).

S Railway triumphs

At Virudhunagar, Southern Railway, Chennai, won the women's title for the VKV Nataraja Nadar memorial Trophy for the fifth successive year, defeating SAI (Salem) 40-21 in the last match of the semifinal round-robin league in the fifth annual State-level basketball tournament, organised by the Kamaraj Basketball Club, at the KVS HSS ground on Sunday.

Southern Railway emerged winner with an all-win record and SAI, which lost only to Southern Railway to finish runner up, was awarded the Karthik Nursing Home Trophy.

Rising Star Basketball Club, Chennai, defeated Vayoodooth Basketball Club, Chennai, 48-45 for its only win in another match and finished third.

Earlier in the men's section, Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, beat BSNL, Chennai, 70-62 for its second win in the league and set up a title-clash with the defending champion, Southern Railway, in the last match of the league.

The results: Men: League: ICF, Chennai, 70 (Sirkkander Oli Raja 19, Boopalan 14) bt BSNL, Chennai, 62 (Sivarajan 18, Vinoth 16, Saravana Kumar 16).

Women: Southern Railway 40 (Athithya 10, Meenalatha 14) bt SAI, Salem, 21 (Amutha 10); Rising Star BC 48 (Sawmya 10, Sobana Priya 10) bt Vayoodooth BC 45 (Prabha 23).

St. Joseph's in last eight

At Karaikudi, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi, and Nethaji Sports Club, Chennai, entered the quarterfinals of the 24th Champion Club football tournament for the Universal Trophy with 4-1 and 5-0 victories over Youngsters Football Club, Avadi, and Solar Football Club, Nilakottai, respectively at the Krishna Stadium, Velangudi, on Sunday.

Subbaraj (eighth, 54th, 66th) and Mouris (61st) scored for St. Joseph's College. Krishna Kumar (64th) reduced the margin.

In the other match, Kali Allaudin (third, seventh) and Panneer Selvam (12th, 18th) scored a brace each, while Nagarathinam (49th) netted one.

Murugesan shines

At Dindigul, an unbeaten 104 (44b, 15x4, 5x6) by Murugesan and his 171-run second wicket partnership with S.P. John Devadoss (59 not out) helped Sam Babu Elevens, Kodaikanal, defeat Vignesh Sports Club by nine wickets in the Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league on Sunday.

The scores: Vignesh SC 169 for three decl. in 14 overs (M. Mohamed Rafiq 70) lost to Sam Babu XI 173 for one in 19.1 overs (N. Murugesan 104 not out, S.P. John Devadoss 59 not out).

Ashwath in sole lead

R. Ashwath of Chennai, with five points, emerged the sole leader at the end of the fifth round of the second R. Ramasamy Gounder memorial FIDE-rating open chess tournament, organised by the Karur District Chess Association, in Karur, on Sunday.

Important results: Fifth round: M.B. Muralidharan (Ker) 4.5 drew with Shyam Nikhil (Mdu) 4.5; Ram S. Krishnan (BSNL) 4 lost to R. Ashwath (Che) 5; K. Ratnakaran (S. Rly) 4.5 bt Dustagir Ibrahim (Mdu) 4; A. Shankar (S. Rly) 4 drew with Balasubramanian (ICF) 4; Premnath (Kanchi) 4.5 bt Mariarul (S. Rly) 3.5; Nitin (Salem) 4 drew with Saravanakrishnan (Kanchi) 4; Vinoth Kumar (Che) 4 bt Babu (Che) 3.5; O.T.
