Sixteen injured in another Guwahati blast

Special Correspondent

Second blast in the city in the last four days

GUWAHATI: Sixteen persons were injured in a powerful blast near the Sani temple at Fancybazaar, the trade and commercial hub of the city on Sunday.

The injured included a girl student from Arunachal Pradesh and a CRPF jawan.

The condition of the girl is said to be serious.

Police said the blast occurred around 6.15 p.m. when an improvised explosive device (IED), suspected to have been planted by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), on a motorbike went off in the busy locality.

Second blast

This was the second blast in the city in the last four days.

Earlier, two staff members of the Food Corporation of India were injured when the militant outfit triggered a blast at the corporation's Noonmati depot on Thursday.

The blast came amid heightened security measures ahead of the two-day visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh beginning on May 8. Dr. Singh is expected to file his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha election on Wednesday to seek another term.

Earlier, during the last visit of the Prime Minister to the city on April 8, an ULFA militant was killed and others were injured when an IED being carried by the militant on a motorbike went off on a road leading to the PM's route from the airport to the Raj Bhavan.

Security measures in the city have been tightened in the wake of the blast and in view of the agitation announced by the All-Assam Students' Union and the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

Agitation planned

The AASU will launch a series of agitation beginning on Tuesday coinciding with the visit of the Prime Minister demanding a halt to the process of delimitation of Assembly constituencies till the National Register of Citizens is updated.

The AGP also decided to stage a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhutan and submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister to press for its demand for a halt to the delimitation exercise.
