The interview with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi (May 7) at a time when he is to be felicitated to mark 50 years as a legislator is timely. His astonishing ability to recall and describe things that happened many years ago accurately reveals an extraordinary memory. His unqualified acceptance of K. Kamaraj's contribution to the development of the State and commitment to the downtrodden speaks volumes about his unbiased view in acknowledging a man's good qualities despite the latter belonging to a rival party.

Courtesy demands that the celebrations of Mr. Karunanidhi's 50 years as a legislator are not politicised. In today's society, when the youth lack real role models and are mostly swayed by film personalities, it is necessary to project the extraordinary achievements of a few ordinary men of our times. Mr. Karunanidhi is one such personality whose contributions to various fields should inspire us. His leadership qualities, political wisdom, tactful rapport with the Centre, the opposition, and the media, and his interest in art and culture are praiseworthy.

It is commendable that Mr. Karunanidhi listed K. Kamaraj as the most efficient Chief Minister the State has had — based on his contribution to development of the State and commitment to the downtrodden.

I have been an admirer of Mr. Karunanidhi for long. Had your reporter posed some provocative questions to him, his answers would have helped bring out his statesmanship. His glorious past has no relevance; how he is going to lead the Tamils now is more important.

In the interview, Mr. Karunanidhi remarked that "it cannot be said with certainty that only because we are part of the Indian Union, we are better off." However, one feels Tamils are worse off because of the anti-Hindi stance adopted by the DMK government for years. It has been a virtual struggle for Tamilians to carry out even day-to-day activities in other States without knowing Hindi.
