MYSORE: Four members of a family allegedly committed suicide at Neralakere village in Arakere police station limits of Srirangapatna taluk in Mandya district on Tuesday. They consumed poison over a property dispute. The deceased have been identified as Ningamma (75), her daughter Devamma (50), her brother Eraiah alias Chikkamoga (55) and his wife Chikkathavamma (50). Chikkamoga's daughter Jayalingamma (25), who also consumed poison, is battling for life at the District Hospital.

Mandya Superintendent of Police B.S. Prakash said Chikkamoga's son Veerabhadara, who is speech impaired, had been forcing his father to give him a share in the family property at the behest of his wife and in-laws. However, the family members told Veerabhadra that though the one-acre of dry land belonged to him, they could not give it to him now as they depended on it for survival. A quarrel broke out between Veerabhadra and his father on Tuesday night on the issue. After some time, Veerabhadra left home, the police said. Depressed over frequent quarrels, all five of the family allegedly consumed poison at night. Jayalingamma, who screamed for help after consuming poison, was rushed to hospital.
