MYSORE: Schoolchildren participating in the summer science camp have conducted a study on the quality of drinking water in Mysore and have found that the level of contamination is high. Thirty-eight schoolchildren are attending the camp being held at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE). N.V. Anagha, S. Harshitha, Spoorthi V. Raj, S. Rajesh, G.M. Darshan, R. Ambreen, Soundarya Lahiri and Rakshith R. Gore worked on various aspects related to water.
Samples
They collected 38 water samples from different parts of the city and subjected them to various tests. Four samples were taken from the RIE and the tests showed that water was polluted. Ten samples of the 11 taken from T.K. Layout, Saraswathipuram, Kuvempunagar were polluted.
Positive
Likewise, four out of six samples from Bogadi, Janata Nagar and Sharadevi Nagar tested positive, and in all, 23 of the 38 water samples were polluted, said Anagha. Similarly, 14 samples of 19 taken from the Cauvery were polluted, while nine of the 17 samples from borewells were polluted, said Anagha.
Bacteria
Hence, it was concluded that both borewell and Cauvery water supplied to residents in Mysore was polluted by pathogenic bacteria. The students were trained by A. Ramalingam of Dr. Ajay Memorial Drinking Water Foundation.
