TAMBARAM : A decision made for the administrative convenience of the police over a year ago is now posing problems for families whose members are killed, injured or involved in road accidents. An office of the Traffic Police-Investigation was opened in Tambaram about one year ago. Starting with the jurisdiction of only a few police stations in and around Tambaram, it now covers almost the jurisdiction of entire St. Thomas Mount police district. Accidents that happen in the limits of the 15 police stations in this district are investigated by Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation) now. The jurisdiction of Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation) extends from Nandambakkam to Perungalathur; Tambaram to Medavakkam and many other arterial roads in the southern suburbs of Chennai. Chennai Bypass connecting Grand Southern Trunk Road with Grand Western Trunk Road (Bangalore Highway), GST Road, Velachery Main Road, Mount - Poonamallee Road , Pallavaram - Thoraipakkam Radial Road and Mambakkam Main Road are some of the accident-prone roads that also come under its jurisdiction. So far this year, nearly 90 people have been killed in road accidents. These cases are pursued by Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation.) Problems for relatives of those killed or injured begin once they commence the paperwork. Earlier, the relatives had to shuttle between the local police station and hospitals, located invariably close to the accident spot. Now, they have to travel to Tambaram for the paperwork. Be it Nandambakkam, Madipakkam, Medavakkam and other far flung areas, relatives do not have an option but to shuttle between their houses, the office of Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation) and the hospitals. Local police stations conduct preliminary investigations, register First Information Report and hand over the case to Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation).
