CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University on Thursday launched a certificate course in telehealth, in partnership with the Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation.

University Vice-Chancellor Meer Mustafa Hussain signed a memorandum of understanding with K. Ganapathy, head of the Foundation.

The certificate in `Introduction to Telehealth' will be offered for health professionals, especially those who have a basic medical graduation, Dr. Hussain said.

The course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with skills needed to deliver and manage telehealth systems. The participants will be trained in understanding the design, selection, procurement, instalment, management, maintenance and evaluation of telehealth systems appropriate to the present and future needs, said Dr. Ganapathy, who will serve as the course director. Experts from all over the world will deliver lectures through videoconference.

The first batch will be trained from July 16 to August 12. Classes will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The fee is Rs. 15,000, inclusive of course materials and other sundry expenses. Only 30 students will be accommodated in each batch.

With telemedicine becoming an integral part of the healthcare delivery, it is likely that tomorrow's doctor may be a misfit if he/she has not been introduced to technology, Dr. Hussain said. He urged healthcare professionals to join the course.
