ADDING STRENGTH: Renovation work on the parapet of the Big Temple at Thanjavur in progress.

THANJAVUR: The Archaeological Survey of India is executing conservation work at the Big Temple here at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh.

ASI experts are dismantling the damaged ceiling of the northern corridor to a length of 26 metres.

It will be replaced soon. In the area where the corridor has sunk, the old foundation will be dismantled and a new one laid.

At the Airavateswaraswamy Temple at Darasuram, conservation of the northern corridor will be taken up in June. The entire corridor will be dismantled and reconstructed. The brick foundation stumbled upon by ASI workers outside the temple, near the moat, will also be conserved.

Electrification of the main shrine and the Amman shrine and the lawn has been taken up by the Tourism Department with the fund allotted by the Union Tourism Ministry. The Tamil Nadu Tourism hotel at Thanjavur will be renovated. Amenities will be created for devotees at the Navagrahakshetras in the district, sources in the Tourism Department said.
