MUMBAI: Two more accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts trial on Tuesday. Three others were sentenced to five to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for their role in landing, illegal possession of arms and ammunition and attempt to destroy evidence. Special Judge P.D. Kode sentenced Pervez Zulfikar Qureshi under Section 120-b (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(3) of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for committing preparatory act to a terrorist act. The judge noted that his was a "curious case." He was involved in the conspiracy from the Shekhadi landing, meetings, weapons' training in Pakistan to the last meeting at Al Husseini building where the vehicle bombs were assembled. However, he left early on March 12 and did not return to plant the bombs. He also received a meagre amount of Rs.5000. Likening Qureshi's case to that of Nasir Dhakla, who was convicted earlier, he sentenced him to life imprisonment. Salim Mira Sheikh alias Salim Kutta also got life term for his role in the conspiracy. Noor Mohammad Khan was sentenced to five years RI and a fine of over a lakh rupees for trying to dispose the explosives kept in his warehouse. Another accused to be sentenced for possessing and disposing arms and ammunition was Altaf Ali Mushtaq Ali Sayyad. He had two suitcases containing hand grenades allegedly given to him by Yakub Memon. He was sentenced to 10 years RI and a fine of Rs.2,50,000.
