End of metre gauge era

Because of gauge conversion between Madurai and Dindigul, express trains between Podanur and Madurai have been cancelled from June 22. Passenger trains will run from Dindigul to Podanur/Palakkad in the day time for the time-being. Also, Coimbatore-Madurai Express used to run with the rakes of erstwhile Vaigai Express and covered the distance between the two cities in just four-and-a- half hours! Southern Railway should complete the full gauge conversion from Dindigul to Podanur in two years. .

Extend train

As Thiruvananthapuram has become the IT hub of Kerala, there are a lot of passengers commuting regularly to Thiruvananthapuram from Coimbatore. But there is no direct train between Coimbatore to Thiruvananthapuram in the evening. Because of this, passengers from Coimbatore have either to travel to Palakkad or Tirupur to board train. Amirtha Express from Palakkad should be extended to Coimbatore or Chennai Express (2695) should be diverted through Coimbatore Junction.

Daily train needed

Coimbatore has a floating population because of industries in Tirupur, Coimbatore , Palladam, Pollachi and Mettupalayam. Many skilled workers here are from South Tamil Nadu. To facilitate their travel to their native places the railways has introduced a special train between Coimbatore and Nagercoil in the midnight on Tuesdays when many workers cannot avail of leave. The train should run every day and the departure time at Coimbatore should be 9 p.m. and at Nagercoil 8 p.m.
