Facilities added: A computer lab set up with Rotary assistance at Dr. Ambedkar Government Higher Secondary School in Egmore was opened on Wednesday.
CHENNAI: The new computer laboratory of Dr. Ambedkar Government Higher Secondary School at Egmore was filled with a group of excited students. In a joint project, the Rotary Club of Chennai Galaxy and the Madras Cosmopolitan Round Table 94 constructed a two-classroom building as part of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme in the school. An air-conditioned laboratory with five new computers was also given by Rotary and its former District Governor J.B. Kamdar. Speaking at the inauguration of the new facilities, District Education Officer (Chennai South) P. Surya Kani said that education was essential for success. She added that teachers should motivate children with a ‘can do’ attitude and encourage them to score good marks. By adding to the infrastructure of the school, Rotary and Round Table aimed to make it as good as a private school, she said. Headmaster of the school N. Rajasekaran was presented with an exemplary service award. According to President of the club Rajkumar Devarajan, the award was given for infusing “hope and aspiration in the students.” The school’s standard had improved considerably after Rajasekaran took over last year, he added. A total of 127 pairs of footwear were also given away by Rotary to the schoolchildren. The Dr. Ambedkar School was adopted by the Rotary Club of Chennai Galaxy four years ago, and the club has been adding to the infrastructure of the school since then. This year, 50 government and government-aided schools have been renovated by Rotary in Chennai and other neighbouring districts.
