Three land grabbing accused detained under Goondas Act

Staff Reporter

They created fake documents and forged seals and stamp

About 1.30 lakh square feet land recovered

The value of the property estimated to be Rs. 50 crore

CHENNAI: Three persons arrested on charges of land grabbing were detained under the Goondas Act on Wednesday.

Police said K. Jeyachandran (49) of New Colony, Velachery, D Dhandapani (47) of Amman Koil Street, Tiruvanmiyur, and P.Durai (48) of Hanuman Colony, Injambakkam, were allegedly found indulging in land grabbing, creating fake documents and forging seals and stamps.

Following recommendations from the Central Crime Branch police, Commissioner Letika Saran directed detention of the trio under the Goondas Act, a release said.

Additional Commissioner of Police S. R. Jangid said that the CCB police recovered about 1.30 lakh square feet land taken over by land grabbers in the city and restored it to the rightful owners. The value of the property was estimated to be around Rs 50 crore. Owing to an increase in land prices, more complaints of land grabbing were coming in, he added.

Deputy Commissioner (CCB) K Dharmarajan said land grabbers would be dealt with sternly and the CCB police detained T. Munikumar of T.Nagar on charges of land grabbing under the Goondas Act last year. Modus operandi

Explaining the modus operandi of the three persons detained under the Goondas Act, he said they fabricated fake general power of attorney and subsequently registered the sale to third persons.

Thiagarajan of Shenoy Nagar had complained that he had purchased 14 grounds at Injambakkam in 1983. However, Jeyachandran, Dhandapani and Durai had allegedly fabricated a death certificate of Thiagarajan (though he was alive) and forged documents.

By creating a fake general power of attorney in his wife’s name, the trio sold the property and registered it in the sub-registrar’s office at Velachery and Saidapet in 2003 and 2005.

The three were charged with impersonation, fabrication and forgery.

Based on their confessions, they were arrested.

A city court remanded them to judicial custody, Mr Dharmarajan said.
